Comicpalooza - January 22, 2011

The group, Comicpalooza, reached out to ArtLoveMagic to host their Dallas event at 2826 Arnetic in Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX). The live art event featured artists painting/drawing art based on comic book characters and styles. The floor was then open for the general public to bid on their works in an auction and take the art home.

Proceeds from the art sales went to benefit the
Hero Initiative, a charity whose mission is to provide financial or medical assistance to the comic creators who gave us their stories, their labor, and their love but all too often ended up without pensions, royalties,
or insurance. Writers and artists who created the characters we now cherish are now in their latter
years and facing poverty.

Along with Lawrence, live artists included:

James O'Barr (The Crow)

Samax Amen (ghettomanga.com)

Khalid Robertson (Big Steelo, Champion of Children)

David Rodriguez (renowned Dallas painter)

Jerod Alexander (artist, Three of One/Just.Us.League)

Isaac Davies (artist, Three of One/Just.Us.League)

Bob Luedke (Eye Witness)

Michael Lagocki (ghostwerks, artlovemagic)

Trayce Cochran (street artist)

Cal Slayton (Shades of Blue)

Christopher Garcia
(Marvel/WildStorm/CrossGen colorist)

Joe Skilz (graffiti artist)

Michael Champion

For the event, Lawrence created a piece featuring DC Comic characters, Superman,  Batman, and Captain Marvel (Shazam). He created this piece entirely from prisma pencil and a very large sharpie.

It depicts the some what  strained  relationship between Batman and Superman with Captain Marvel thrown in the middle of the conflict as a wild card. It was a challenge in the fact that this was a style that he used in high school and college and was able to create the style using a technique enabled by the pencils' blending capability. It was an especially challenging and
rewarding experience creating this piece in front
of such a large crowd.

The night featured a mixture of a unique social mixture
of music, live art and a wide variety of people and personalities. Here we see ArtLoveMagic's Dave Rodriguez working on a painting of Kitty Pryde and Colossus from X-Men. Also, we have Ghetto Manga's Samax Amen creating a portrait of Marvel's Incredible Hulk from marker. One of the most interesting things about this show was that it was an auction with each piece going at bargain prices. People walked away
with some of the most unique art work of their favorite comic heroes.
